  Sunita Williams - Biography Sunita Williams was born on September 19, 1965 , in Ohio, USA . She grew up in Needham, Massachusetts , and attended Needham High School. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science from the United States Naval Academy (1987) and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology (1995) . Williams was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy in 1987. She became a helicopter pilot.  She eventually became a test pilot , logging over 3,000 flight hours in more than 30 different aircraft. In 1998 , Williams was selected by NASA as an astronaut . She participated in two space missions. Williams has completed seven spacewalks , totaling 50 hours and 40 minutes , making her one of the most experienced female spacewalkers.
