Kashmir Terror Attack Triggers Crisis in Daily Income for Locals
– April 23, 2025
Following the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists, including an Indian Navy officer and a Nepali citizen, fear and panic have gripped the valley—crippling the local economy and plunging thousands of daily wage earners into crisis.
Kashmir’s tourism sector, a lifeline for many, has witnessed mass cancellations overnight. Travel agents report up to 90% of bookings withdrawn within 48 hours. Hotels, shikaras, pony rides, handicraft stalls, and local eateries now stand deserted.
“We earn only when tourists come,” says Bashir Ahmad, a horseman in Baisaran. “This season was our hope after the long winter. Now, there is nothing.”
Vendors, guides, cab drivers, and small shopkeepers—most of whom rely on day-to-day earnings—now struggle to buy basic necessities. The government has yet to announce a compensation or relief package for them.
The psychological toll is equally severe. Parents are hesitant to send children to school, and workers fear venturing far from home. “It feels like we’re back in the dark days,” says Rizwana, who sells souvenirs near Lidder River.
Security has been tightened across the valley, but the fear persists. As the military combs the hills for militants, the people of Kashmir face a different battle—one of hunger, uncertainty, and survival.
